Dear All, Apologies to those of you not attending next week's EU Grid PMA, but this is the easiest way of contacting everyone. Those not attending can now delete! Some last minute logistical details as you prepare for your visit. Read to the end, there is important info about "trust building" at the end! See http://hepwww.rl.ac.uk/kelsey/EUGridPMA/ralmeeting.htm for local info (not changed since meeting first announced) 1. Registration, Accommodation, Meeting location etc Please check http://www.eugridpma.org/meetings/2007-01/participants If your name is not on there, you are not expected at the meeting. All attendees must register! Tricia Shand will have already confirmed your accommodation bookings (directly to you) in Coseners House (if you asked for a room). Please note that as with any other hotel, it is your responsibility to pay the room charges on departure. Those of you departing on Wednesday 17th will need to check out before the meeting starts that day. The meeting on Monday and Wednesday is in Seminar Room 1, Coseners House and on Tuesday in Conference Room 12, Building R68 at RAL. If you will arrive on Tuesday and need advice about reaching RAL yourself, please ask me. We will provide a bus to transport people between Coseners and RAL on Tuesday (and back!) Seminar Room 1 is reserved for us all day on Monday, so those of you arriving on Sunday or those arriving early on Monday are welcome to install yourself there and use the wireless network etc etc. 2. Transport, Maps etc Most details are already on the earlier local info web page. A few additions... Coseners House is in a beautiful quiet location in Abingdon (down by the River Thames), so this makes it somewhat difficult to find! This map shows the location well... http://www.cclrc.ac.uk/Activities/Maps/fullTCHmap.gif Buses from Oxford (X3, X4, X13) terminate in Abingdon at Stratton Way (shown on the map). It is then a short walk along High Street, through the arch way by the church into Abbey Close and on to Coseners. Taxis are able to drive all the way to the Coseners House. Anyone arriving by car will be able to park at Coseners House (free of charge). For those of you wishing to take a bus from Oxford to Abingdon, these leave from several stops in Oxford but the two main places are the Oxford Rail Station and St. Aldates - see maps on this timetable http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/cgi-bin/cms-pull.cgi?/oasis-ims/img/oxfordbus /live/20060326%20RX3Times.pdf (the times may not be up to date, but it was the only map I could find showing bus stops!) 3. Meals etc A buffet lunch will be provided on Monday at Coseners House in the meeting room from about 13:00. Lunch on Tuesday at RAL will be available (at your own expense) in the lab restaurant. We are, however, pleased to provide a dinner for all attendees on Tuesday evening (reception/drinks at 19:15 and dinner at 19:45) - in Coseners House. We are assuming that all registered people will attend this. If you know now that you will not be able or do not wish to attend, please let me know so we can adjust the numbers. If you have specified your dietary needs on the registration form then these will be taken into account. If you have not told us that you are vegetarian or have other needs, also please let me know. 4. Miscellaneous I feel I should warn people travelling by air about the EU regulations on carrying liquids in hand luggage. These are strictly enforced at all UK airports. See, for example, (what a URL!) http://www.heathrowairport.com/portal/controller/dispatcher.jsp?CiID=fb9 da11b4763d010VgnVCM10000036821c0a____&CtID=448c6a4c7f1b0010VgnVCM2000003 57e120a____&Ct=B2C_CT_GENERAL&RootCh=Airport%20Information&Ch=Security+c ontrol&ChID=b0eba11b4763d010VgnVCM10000036821c0a____&ChPath=LHR%5EAirpor t+Information%5ESecurity+control&ChIDPath=bde597dc2eb12010VgnVCM10000014 7e120a____%5E473797dc2eb12010VgnVCM100000147e120a____%5Eb0eba11b4763d010 VgnVCM10000036821c0a____ There is also a very strictly enforced rule of just ONE piece of hand luggage (on departure from UK that is - coming here your local rules apply!). Laptop computers, ladies handbags etc etc etc MUST also fit inside the one piece of hand luggage (airport security in the UK allows NO exceptions - I have personally seen many people told to go back to check-in). Please take this into account when you plan your luggage etc. On the topic of weather, there is currently no sign of snow, although recent January EU Grid PMA's would suggest it should happen (!!!). It is currently predicted to be wet but not too cold (4 to 9 deg C) (and right now it is very windy). 5. Contact numbers Tricia Shand is out of the office on Friday 12th Jan, but can be reached on PLEASE SEE YOUR MAILBOX during normal office hours at other times. Coseners House: +44 1235 523198 (should you have to cancel your room at short notice, please contact Coseners directly) My personal mobile phone: PLEASE SEE YOUR MAILBOX (call me any time, except during the night!) 6. Trust Building And last but by no means least.... For those of you arriving on or before Sunday, I propose that we meet at Coseners House (in the main entrance lobby at say 19:00) to form a trust building party which will involve eating (and maybe even drinking!) somewhere together in the town. All welcome! I don't plan on reserving anywhere as I think we will not be too many. We can also leave contact details with the Coseners reception for those of you arriving later in the evening. Please let me know (e-mail direct to me, not reply to list) if you plan to join in, just so I know roughly how many to expect. There will be other trust building opportunities during the days that follow :=) Looking forward to seeing you in Abingdon. Have a good trip here....
